I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

CHAPTER II: CITY OF CRAIG

1.0 HISTORY

The City was founded in the early 1880's and was incorporated in 1908. The
City was designated the Moffat County Seat in 1911. Industrial energy
development and growth has fluctuated drastically throughout the City's
history, while the agricultural sector of the economy has remained constant.
The City may experience significant future growth dependent on the strength of
the oil and coal markets. The City remains the economic hub of northwestern
Colorado. The City now covers an area of approximately 5 square miles. It is
located at an elevation of 6,185 feet above sea level.

The City is a "full service city". Public services include water and sewer
systems, police protection, a municipal court system, street maintenance, and
nUMerous parks and recreation facilities. Other facilities such as public
schools, public transit, hospitals, telephone utilities, garbage collection,
power utilities, and voluntary fire department protection are readily
available to residents. Advanced educational opportunities are providej
through Colorado Northwest Community College and the Colorado State University
Extension Office.

- 7 -
