<br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />CHAPTER I: GENERAL INFORMATION <br /> <br />1.0 LOCATION <br /> <br />Elkhead Lake Dam is located on Elkhead Creek, a tributary of the Yampa River, <br />approximately 10 miles northeast of the City of Craig. The dam is owned by <br />the CDOW, and the reservoir is maintained for recreational purposes. The <br />E1khead Lake drainage area covers 205 square miles. The stream is 34 miles <br />long upstream of the dam, and the basin elevation ranges from 6375 feet to <br />9982 feet. The drainage area is covered by approximately 50 percent sagebrush <br />and grass, with the remaining 50 percent covered by forest. Topography ranges <br />from mountainous to gently rolling hills. <br /> <br />:~offat County is located in the northwestern corner of Colorado, and is <br />bordered by Utah on the west and Wyoming on the north. The City of Craig is <br />in the eastern portion of the county, approximately 210 miles northwest of <br />Denver and 155 miles northeast of Grand Junction. <br /> <br />The location of E1khead Lake Dam and Reservoir and drainage basin are shown on <br />the project map, Figure 1.1. The map includes the major features of the Craig <br />water supply and treatment system, and the princi;>al cities in the region. <br /> <br />- 1 - <br />
