The sponsoring governmental agency in addition to the
C.W.C.B. is the Town of Nunn.
Copies of this report are available and can be obtained from the
Town of Nunn and the C.W.C.B. upon their approval.
The Town of Nunn in Weld County, Colorado currently has a criticoll
water quality problem with their existing shallow wells. The town has been
informed by the State Department of Health that the town must correct the
problem of excessively high nitrates in the raw water supply Or face
classification of the water system as non-potable or possibly have the
supply shut down. The concentration of nitrates in the raw water supply
have varied from about 80 mg/l to 130 mg/l of nitrate (N03-) as compared
with the mandatory state standard of 45 mg/l (ppm).
Nunn is located about 20 miles north of Greeley, Colorado and 30 miles
south of Cheyenne, Wyoming on U.S. Highway 85. The current population of
the town is 300 persons with approximately 120 families represented.
The present water supply is derived from two groundwater sources; one
so~rce is two shallow wells pumping from the South Platte River tributary
groundwater (approximately 80 gpm each), and the second source is a deep
well (-770') in the Laramie/Fox Hills formation (--12 gpm). The water is
chlorinated and pumped to a 50,000 gallon elevated storage tank for distribution.
The distribution system consists mainly of cast iron pipe constructed in the
