Fire Flow Demand <br />Fire flow demands on a municipal water supply system should be <br />considered in the hydraulic design of the distribution system including <br />storage. Although the annual consumption is not large, extremely large <br />hourly demands can be placed on the system, The quantities of water used <br />to size a system is a function of the population and economic value of the <br />buildings in the COITImunity. Since the fire insurance rates are dependent <br />upon the availability of fire flow capacities, the design capacities are <br />dependent upon the value the community places on their property, A fire <br />flow demand of 590 gpm for 2 hours (60,000 gallons) which is generally <br />considered a minimum, was used for this study to test the adequacy of the <br />existing distribution system, <br />2, Storage Requirements <br />The desirable storage requirement for a town would be the sum of <br />the required storage for fire protection, emergency reserve, and operating <br />storage to equalize daily fluctuations in demand. Based on the fire flow <br />indicated in the previous section, a fire reserve of 60,000 gallons would <br />be desirable. An emergency storage of one days demand based upon the future, <br />average daily use rate is deemed as acceptable for well shutdown purposes. <br />For Nunn, this emergency storage requirement would be 80,000 gallons. <br /> <br />24 <br />
