The groundwater from
the shallow \~ells which have served as the Town's primary source for many
years is very high in nitrates, on the order of 120 mg/l as N03-. Because
of the State's mandatory limit of 45 mg/l of nitrates, the Town is in danger
of having the water supply classified as non-potable or shut down by the
State Health Department. In addition to the presentation of several possible
alternatives for solving the water quality problem, the preliminary design
of the most feasible and economical alternative has been presented herein.
Secondary to the main purpose of the report, an analysis of the
existing distribution system including storage and fire flow requirements
was completed, and the results presented herein along with recommendations for
improvements for a more efficient operation of the system. All recommended
improvements and the preliminary design have been based upon the estimated
future population of Nunn in the year 2000.
The Town of Nunn is located at an elevation of 5185 feet in northeast
Colorado (Weld County). The climate of the area is characterized by
relatively mild, warm summers, and cool winters. The average yearly preci-
pitation for the Town is 12.4 inches based upon a 25 year period of record.
The Town limits encompass all of Section 33, Township 9N, Range 66 W (640
acres), and is located about 20 miles north of Greeley on U.S. Highway 8!
(refer to the General Location Map, Figure 1-1).
