.

.

.

. .
Denver Museum of Natural History

Jan. 20, 1998

Colorado Water Conservation Board
1313 Sherman Street, Room 721
Denver, Colorado 80203

Dear Board Members:

The attached proposal seeks funds from the Project Planning and Construction Section of
the Water Conservation Board to complement funds requested from the National Science
Foundation to drill and core a 2000 foot research well in central Elbert County. This well
will sample the primary bedrock aquifers of the Denver Basin. The project is being carried
out as a joint effort by the Denver Museum of Natural History and the Division of Water
Resources of the US Geological Survey. The National Science Foundation has been asked
for funding to cover 30% of the well drilling and core recovery and all of the
paleontological and geological analyses of the core. Weare seeking local, Colorado-based
funds for the remainder of the coring costs and the hydrologic analyses.

The proposed core will comprise a uniquely valuable data set which will serve as a
reference for the hydrologic characteristics of the Denver Basin aquifers from the central
portion of the Basin.

The core will be permanently stored at the USGS core storage facility in Lakewood where
it will be publicly available. Hydrologic analyses of the core will provide critical
information for groups interested in quantifying, adjudicating, and appropriately allocating
the finite subsurface water resources of the Basin.

Sincerely,

~~

Kirk Johnson
Curator of Paleontology

~~

Bob Raynolds
Research Associate

2001 Colorsdo Boulevard, Denver, Colorsdo 80205-5798 3031370-6387 Fax: 303/331-6492
