I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

CHAPTER II

GENERAL INFORMATION

In this feasibility report, alternative means are explored for providing treated

domestic-type water to several communities and water companies in two southwest-

ern Colorado counties, Montezuma and Dolores. One feasible and economically

practical alternative has been selected for implementation, and the proposed

facilities are diagramed in Figure 2-1, along with the pertinent features of the

Bureau of Reclamation's Dolores Project. The bureau project, which is scheduled

to be completed in 1984, is the anticipated raw water supply source for the

facilities studied in this report. The Dolores Water Conservancy District will

be responsible for overseeing operation and management of the transmission and

treatment systems ultimately constructed.

A. LOCATION:

Two tributaries of the Colorado River Basin drain the southwestern corner of

Colorado where the study area is located (See Figure 2-2). These are the San

Juan and Dolores Rivers. Raw water for the project will be supplied from the

Dolores River Basin. The general service area may be approximately described

as a ten-mile wide strip on either side of U.S. Highway 666 extending from

Towaoc to Dove Creek. Within this area, a number of water service entities are

found, including the municipalities of Cortez, Dolores, and Dove Creek; the

rural communities of Towaoc, Arriola, Lewis, Lebanon, Yellow Jacket, Pleasant

View and Cahone; and special entities such as Montezuma Valley Irrigation Company,

Montezuma Water Company, Blue Door District and Summit Ridge. The largest munici-

pality is the City of Cortel with a population of about 8,000. Later in this

report, the existing potable water facilities of the various water purveyors will

be discussed.

The elevation of the proposed major treatment plant is approximately 6800 feet

above sea level. About 80% of the service area may be served by gravity from

this point. The highest elevation to which water will be pumped is 7100 feet.

-6-
