I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

SECTION FOUR
WATER SUPPLY

GENERAL
The District presently uses water from wells located in three widely separated well fields.
Because of the physical characteristics of the District it is imperative that all three fields be in
operation at all times. The three fields are located in the Hay Gulch Basin, The San Arroyo
Basin and the Beaver Creek Basin.

HAY GULCH WELLS
The Hay Gulch wells, also known as the Krause Ranch wells, are located approximately 9
miles west of Wiggins Colorado in Sections; & 8, T3N, R61 W. The wells draw from the
Hay Gulch aquifer which consists of shallow unconsolidated sands and gravels in an ancient
stream bed. Recharge to the alluvium occurs through percolation of rainfall. The surface area
of the watershed is approximately 37 square miles. The static water level in the field varies
from about 30 to 50 feet. Maximum saturated thickness is about 100 feet.

The basin is classified as a closed basin by the State Engineer. There are pennits for five wells
in the basin. Four of the pennitted wells are owned by the Morgan County Quality Water
District. The other well is owned by the State of Colorado and leased to the District. The
District wells are pennitted for 1,380 acre feet. The State well is pennitted for 500 acre feet.
A study of the basin was made by Morton Bittinger and Associates in 1973. Mr. Bittinger
found that the safe yield of the aquifer is 1200 to 1500 acre feet annually.

BEAVER CREEK WELLS
The Beaver Creek wells, also Known as the Smart wells, draw from the Beaver Creek basin
aquifer located in Section 28, T4N, R56W, South of Brush Colorado. The basin covers a
large portion of Morgan and Washington counties and srnall portions of Arapahoe, Elbert, and
Lincoln counties. The only Towns in the basin are Nine Mile Corner, Woodrow, Gary and
Last Chance. The drainage consists of approximately I, 100 square miles. The alluvium
consists of silt, sand and gravel interbedded with deposits of clay. The combination of the two
Smart wells are adjudicated for 600 acre feet per year. A water budget analyses was prepared
by HRS Water ConsuItants in 1986 which indicates the basin is suitable for yielding the
pennitted quantity.

SAN ARROYO WELLS
The San Arroyo field, also known as the Weitlgardt field, is in Sections 22, 23 & 26, T3N,
R55W, of the San Arroyo Creek drainage, wbich lies Southwesterly from Fort Morgan,
Colorado. The basin is approximately 127 square miles and measures approximately 5.5 miles
by 30 miles. The aquifer consists of Dune sand deposits and basil sand and gravel deposits.
The entire area is underlain by Pierre Shale bedrock. Water quality in the basin varies
significantly. Water under the Westerly portion, under the District property, is less than eight
grains hardness. Water in the main channel is harder.

4
