.

CRAPl'ER I

GENERAL DISCUSSIONS

.

Irrigated lands are used to grow hay and pasture for livestock.

Vacationers often pause in the project area on tours of western Colo-
rado. Many tourists come for the majestic mountain scenery on the eastern
border of the project area and take the Golden Horseshoe drive that circles
from U.S. Highway 160 at Cortez through Telluride, Placerville, Ridgway,
Ouray, Silverton, and Durango. The Telluride-Placerville area offers
numerous recreational opportunities such as jeep trips through the high
alpine country, fishing, hunting, and touring of old mining haunts. The
Colorado Game, Fish, and Parks Department is planning to construct a fish-
ing reservoir on the headwaters of Naturita Creek at the Miramonte Reser-
voir site. Hunting is popular throughout the project area. Winter sport
and resort areas are expanding in the high mountain areas.

Need ~or Project

An expansion of the agricultural base is urgently needed to offset
the fluctuating and currently depressing effects of the mining industry
on the general economy of the project area. New agricultural development
would create new settlement opportunities, more work on existing farms,
and employment in related service industries. Such development would be
a boon to the area's younger generation seeking job opportunities and
to many now in the labor force with uncertain futures in the mining
industry.

.

11
