.

CIlAPrER I

GENERAL DISCUSSIONS

.

Uranium and

ore processing

Extensive deposits or bituminous coal are located at shallow depths
northwest of Nucla. One deposit is being mined by open pit methods by
the Peabody Coal Company chiefly for use at the Nucla steam-electric plant
of the Colorado-Ute Electric Association. Coal of good quality is known
to underlie much land in the vicinity of the project.

Agriculture centers around the livestock industry, particularly pro-
duction of beef cattle and sheep. The livestock industry provides the
area with a fairly stable economic base but its development remains static
because of the limited supply of livestock feeds resulting from the small
amount of irrigation development and limited range resources. Range lands
in the vicinity of the project are used to capacity and range permits have
been decreased in size to forestall depletion of the grazing resources.
Both the Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management have instituted
range improvement programs to protect and increase the productivity of
public lands used for grazing.

.

10
