<br />SECTION V <br /> <br />SUMMARY OF EXISTING <br />WATER SYSTEM <br /> <br />'- <br /> <br />The Town of Starkville was incorporated at <br />3:03 P.M., February 11, 1954, in the County Court of <br /> <br />Las Animas County, State of Colorado, as a community in <br /> <br />Southern Colorado near Trinidad. The Town limits en- <br /> <br />compasses about 70 acres with a population of 160 <br /> <br />according to the 1970 census. <br /> <br />Starkville is about 21:> miles South of Trinidad, (see Figure 1) <br /> <br />a10llg Interstate 25, the main north-south highl..ay route through <br /> <br />Colorado. The Town is near the foot of Raton pass at an <br />elevation of about 6400 feet. Raton Creek passes through <br /> <br />the town and one of Raton Creek tributaries is the main <br /> <br />source of water supply. The tributary is Clear Creek which <br /> <br />junctions with Raton Creek about 2 miles upstream (south) <br /> <br />of the town. Clear Creek flows west from the base of <br /> <br />Fishers Peak, a noted land formation in Southern Colorado. <br /> <br />The Town of Starkville has a water system that was <br /> <br />installed by the Santa Fe Rai1road. The in-town system <br /> <br /> <br />consists of 3" and 4" C.I.P., (see Figure 2-3), and 2 140,000 <br /> <br />gallon storage tank. The storage tank is presently without <br /> <br />a cover. Meters and meter pits are throughout the Town with <br /> <br />most of the meters inoperative. The meter pits are standard <br /> <br />type that require yearly freeze protection e~~orts to <br /> <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />protect against freezing the meters. <br /> <br />- 6 - <br />
