SECTION IV

STARKVILLE WATER PROJECT

INTRODUCTION:

The Town of Starkville is located in Southern Colorado about
2-1/2 miles south of Trinidad along 1-25 near the foot of Raton
Pass. The Town was incorporated in February 1954. It was pre-
dominantly a coal mining town but now is a support living community
to Trinidad. This trend will continue until such time as coal
mining becomes more active in the area.

The town's water system was donated to them by the Santa Fe
Railroad in 1955. The system consists of 4" C.I.P. collection
system up Clear Creek Canyon to the springs on the S.W. slope of
Fishers Peak. The storage donated was a 140,000 gallon tank in
the center of town. Since then, the town has built two storage
tanks, one of 196,000 gallons at the Clear Creek - Raton Creek
junction, and another tank of about 200,000 gallons on Raton Creek
about 3/4 miles upstream from the town limits. In town, a 3"
C.I.P. loop distributes the water to the citizens. At one time,
water meters were used and in good repair. However, most of the
meters are now inoperative. One well was drilled by the town at
the upper storage tank, but this well produces only about 6 gpm.

1
