I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

PROJECT SUMMARY

The purpose of this report is to evaluate the
feasibility of rehabilitation of Rapid Creek Reservoirs #1
and #2, located on Grand Mesa, about 15 miles east of Grand
Junction. Both reservoirs are owned by the Lloyd Ranch
Limited Partnership (hereafter referred to as the
Partnership), and provide irrigation water to 330 acres of
pasture land near Mesa, Colorado. The state Engineer has
inspected the dams of both reservoirs and has ordered major
repairs for both. Until the repairs are completed, the water
level on Rapid Creek Reservoir #I and #2 has been restricted
to 1.0 ft. and 2.5 ft. below the spillways, respectively.

Water rights totaling 2134 AF have been assigned to
Rapid Creek Reservoirs #I and #2, with the adjudications date
varying from 1941 to 1959. Actual storage capacity is 1045
acre feet. The restrictions on water level imposed by the
state Engineer could result in a maximum loss of storage of
about 286 AF of water and a potential loss of much of the
water rights if they are not put to beneficial use.

The rehabilitation and repair work required on the two
reservoirs is summarized below:

Rapid Creek Reservoir #1

1. Replacement of the outlet works (includes addition
of a sluice gate, bar rack and erosion control
structure), and lowering the outlet channel invert.

2. Addition of supplemental riprap for erosion control
on the upstream embankment. An existing scarp must
be repaired.

3. Reinforcement of a 250 ft. section of the main
downstream embankment to prevent the possibility of
slumping. This would consist of a rock berm at the
downstsream toe. In addition, the crest needs to be
brought to a constant elevation and width.

4. Addition of riprap on the old spillway channel.

Rapid Creek Reservoir #2

1. Reinforcement of a 250 ft. section of the main
embankment to prevent the possibility of slumping or
slippage. This will consist of an earthen berm at
the downstream toe and flattening part of the upper
slope. In addition, the crest needs to be brought
to a constant elevation and width.
