i
, i

water from the City of Trinidad, along with sub-

stantial tap fees for new connections.

B. EXISTING FACILITIES

The existing Starkville collection and

distribution system is the outgrowth of a water

and coaling stop for the Atchison, Topeka and

Santa Fe Railroad Co. built about 1980. The

Starkville Coal Mine operated from 1877 to 1917;

and the town water supply was an extension of

the original railroad water supply.

The source of supply was and still is from

springs on the west slopes of Fisher's Peak near

the top of Clear Creek. The collection system

consists of approximately six miles of a mix of

4" cast iron and steel pipe carrying water by

gravity down Clear Creek to Starkville. The

Cobalt Canyon collection area has rusted-out
steel pipe which used to feed some spring water

to the Clear Creek pipe line.

The problem with the existing supply is both

qual~ty and quantity of water available. Clear

Creek is an interrnittant stream, and during dry

years the springs dry up and Starkville is without

4
