EXISTING FACILITIES <br /> <br />The existing Starkville collection and <br /> <br />distribution system is the outgrowth of a water <br /> <br />and coaling stop for the Atchison, Topeka and <br /> <br />Santa Fe Railroad Co. built about 1980. The <br /> <br />Starkville Coal Mine operated from 1877 to 1917; <br /> <br />and the town water supply was an extension of <br /> <br />the original railroad water supply. <br /> <br />The source of supply was and still is from <br /> <br />springs on the west slopes of Fisher's Peak near <br /> <br />the top of Clear Creek. The collection system <br /> <br />consists of approximately six miles of a mix of <br /> <br />4" cast iron and steel pipe carrying water by <br /> <br />gravity down Clear Creek to Starkville. The <br /> <br />Cobalt Canyon collection area has rusted-out <br />steel pipe which used to feed some spring water <br /> <br />to the Clear Creek pipe line. <br /> <br />The problem with the existing supply is both <br /> <br />qual~ty and quantity of water available. Clear <br /> <br />Creek is an interrnittant stream, and during dry <br /> <br />years the springs dry up and Starkville is without <br /> <br />4 <br />
