I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

-

water during the spring snowmelt season for release to downstream users in the

Divide Creek Basin during the late summer months. These releases will increase

the minimum flow in East Divide Creek and provide increased opportunity for

maintaining a fish population in that stream.

The Project will provide a fishery in a pristine mountain setting. This is

an existing reservoir site and the dam has been breached. In its present

condition and at low water levels it cannot sustain a fish population. With

repair of the dam, the reservoir would be a large enough impoundment to provide

an excellent fishery.

Projects such as this are particularly needed in the Divide Creek area

because of increasing demand for recreational opportunities in general, and

sport fishing in particular. These increasing demands result from the growth of

retirement communities such as Battlement Mesa, the gradual conversion of farms

in the West Divide area to recreational homesites, and the proximity to the

major resort areas of Aspen, Snowmass, and Glenwood Springs. While the area as

a whole has great scenic beauty and draws vacationers from all parts of the

county, it is lacking in lakes or ponds that can provide a self-sustaining fish

population. Alsbury Reservoir Rehabilitation will provide a portion of that

need.

-

-25-
