I. INTRODUCTION

I

A. General

I

The Stewart Ditch, located northeast of Paonia, Colorado, is owned

by the Stewart Ditch and Irrigation Company. The ditch diverts water

I

from the North Fork of the Gunnison River and carries it parallel to

the river, on the left bank, to orchards and pastures near Paonia.

I

In June, 1986, at a point about 3 miles upstream of Paonia a slide

I

occurred, upslope of the ditch. The slide carried about 1200 feet of

the ditch and adjacent road into the river. Subsequent to the slide,

I

portions of the ditch were repaired by the Owner. This report descri-

I

bes the stability of the existing slope including both the area that

failed and a potentially unstable slope area to the north.

I

Recommendations for further stabilization methods are also discussed.

This report has resulted in a set of Contract Documents, Technical

Specifications and Construction Drawings entitled "Contract Documents

and Technical Specifications for the Stewart Ditch Landslide

Earthwork". These documents are companions to this report and should

be available for reference when reading this report.
