.'

;. .
One of the most important aspects of the feas i bi 1 ity study is the "
evaluation of the source of supply. A high nitrate content (100 to 121 mg/l)
in the two shallow wells was identified by County and State Health Departments,
(the current drinking water standard is 10 mg/l of nitrate). Because of the poor
water quality, the deep well was constructed in the Laramie/Fox Hills formation.
However, the well currently only yields -v10 gpm, instead of the estimated
50 - 100 gpm. The reason for the lower yield is not known, and based upon
the engineer's evaluation of the test hole well log, the potential for a
higher yield well does exist.
At this time, the town is using all three wells to meet demands. However,
in the future the Town will either have to cease using the shallow wells
or provide additional treatmen~ to meet State Drinking Water Quality Standards,
particularly for nitrates.
The two shallow wells ~re pumping from an aquifer that is considered
. tributary to the South Platte River and are subject to appropriation. The
wells are not exempt from the rules and regulations governing tributary
groundwater, but the wells are allowed to continue to pump, provided that
the amount of water by which the river is depleted is replaced. The Town of
Nunn joined the Groundwater Appropriations of the South Platte (GASP), an
organization which combines the augmentation requirements of many wells,
thereby increasing the efficiency. The GASP augmentation plan has temporary
statutory approval, but may not have filed the plan with the water court.

I

oJ

I
I

1
I

~-::

j

]

]
I
,
I
J

~

I

.
