A photograph of the Santa Maria Dam decant structure is
shown on the fo 11 owi ng page and in Appendi x F. The typi cal con-
figuration of a decant structure is a discharge pipe below the embank-
ment to di scharge the supernatant, and an i ncl i ned or vertical ri ser
tower that is constructed in discrete sections as the dam crest eleva-
tion is raised during placement of embankment fill. A horizontal
cross-section through a typical riser tower shows a square or rec-
tangular shape with concrete on 3-sides and wooden planks or bricks
progressively added to a fourth side. The photographs did not provide
a clear definition of the lOcation and specific details of the
structUre. The structure is a suspected mechanism for the seepage.
TherefC)re, the geotechnical and geophysical program was defined to
locate and provi de detail ed i nformati on on the decant structure as
well as the right abutment and ~bankment.

"III

~

~

j
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

b. Drilling, Sa~pling, and Testing

After defining the location, depth, and sampling and testing
program for each hole, several drillers were contacted to locate a
suitable rig that could complete the work promptly. Kuchler Drilling
of Montrose, Colorado was selected. They utilized a Mobile B-52 rig
specially adapted for either core or auger drilling, hollow and solid-
stem augers, coring rod, and permeability testing equipment.

Si nce the focus of the investigation was on seepage and

permeabi 1 i ty, co11 ecti ng undi sturbed samples from the embankment was

v - 4
