Surficial Geology and Geotechnical Inspection

~

The Santa Maria Oam site inspection and surficial mapping was con-
ducted by Dr. Charles Robinson, R. L. Halley and M. F. Winter. The
inspection effort provided definition of drill hole locations and
depths as well as details of a sampling and testing program. In
addition, the extent of the geophysical program was determined.

....

"III

~

i
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

The drilling program consisted of three vertical holes. Two ver-
tical holes near the right abutment extendi ng from the embankment
crest through the core zone and one vertical hole primarily in abut-
ment rack were proposed. Standard Penetration Tests, soil sampl i ng,
and fi E!l d 1 oggi ng were pl anned for the two embankment holes. Core
drilling and permeability testing were to be done for the abutment
hole. Standpipe piezometers were to be installed in each hole upon
completion of sampling and testing.

The geophysical program wa~ defined to include electromagnetic
(EM), self-potential (SPl, and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) pro-
filing concentrated in the right abutment area. Figure V-2 shows the
location of geophysical surveys.

The GPR profiling was included because close inspection of
1909-1913 construction photos (~hich are included in Appendix F) pre-
served by the Santa Maria Reservoir Company reveal ed exi stence of a
concrete and wood decant structUre near the right abutment contact.
