Geotechnical and Geophysical Investigations

~

The geotechnical and geophysical program was designed to collect
the maJ\imum amount of information on subsurface conditions wi thin
reasonable time and cost constraints. Seepage at the Santa Maria Dam
is confi ned predomi nantly to the right abutment groi n area of the mai n
embankment, with minor seepage noted at the downstream toe of the
embankment at the maximum section. Figure V-I shows variation in
seepage flow rate versus reservoir gage height.

~

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

There is evi dence that at reservoi r 1 evel s approachi ng decreed
storage levels, a localized seep occurs on the left abutment of the
west dike. This possible seep apparently is through the uppermost ten
feet of the embankment or abutment. The geotechnical an<! geophysical
investigation was not directed at this area since the remedy is rela-
tively simpl e.

1. Method of Investigation

The geotechnical and geophysical investigation consisted of an

integrated program to collect information on subsurface conditions. The

scope of the program is described in the following sections.

v - 2
