Via Interstate 70 it is 25 miles
east to Glenwood Springs, Colorado, and 62 miles west to Grand
Junction, Colorado.

CLIMATE

The area which would be served by the proposed system has a semi-
arid to arid climate characterized by average annual temperatures
of 450F to 500F and an average monthly precipitation of 0.90 inch,
The long term average monthly temperatures and precipitation for
the Weather Bureau station at Rifle, Colorado, are listed in Table
1-1, The Weather Bureau records for the station at Rifle for the
20 years from 195B to 1978 indicate a maximum. temperature of 990F
in 1971 and a minimum temperature of _380F in 1963. Generally, the
frost-free period falls between May 26 and September 17 (114 days).

Regional weather patterns may produce valley winds reaching veloci-
ties of 80 mph with gusts up to 100 mph. However, light winds
combined with temperature inversions in the valley are typical dur-
ing the winter and restrict turbulent mixing.

1-3
