I
I
I
I
I

PROJECT SUMMARY

I
I
I
I

The purpose of this report is to evaluate the
feasibility of rehabilitation of Coon Creek Reservoirs ~l and
~2, located on Grand Mesa, about 25 miles east of Grand
Junction. Both reservoirs are owned by the Coon Creek.
Reservoir and Ditch Company (hereafter referred to as the
Coon Creek Reservoir company), and provide irrigation water
to 1644 acres of alfalfa and pasture land near Mesa,
Colorado. The State Engineer has inspected the dams of both
reservoirs and has ordered major repairs for Coon Creek
Reservoir ~l and minor repairs for Coon Creek Reservoir ~2.
Until the repairs are completed, the water level on Coon
Creek Reservoir ~l has been restricted to 5 ft. below the
spillway. The State Engineer also previously imposed a zero
storage restriction on Coon Creek Reservoir ~2, but this has
been lifted following partial repair. The restriction could
be reinstated if repairs are not completed.

I
I
I
I
I

Water rights totaling 1474 AF have been assigned to Coon
Creek Reservoirs ~l and ~2, with the ajudications date
varying from 1905 to 1941. The restrictions on water level
imposed by the State Engineer could result in a maximum loss
of storage of about 300 AF of water and a potential loss of
much of the water rights if they are not put to beneficial
use.

The rehabilitation and repair work required on the two
reservoirs is summarized below:

Coon Creek Reservoir ~l

1. Rehabilitation of a 200 ft. section of the main
embankment to prevent the possibility of slumping
and control seepage. In addition, the crest needs
to be brought to a constant elevation and width and
riprap is needed for erosion control at certain
locations.

I
I
I
I
I

2. Construction of a new spillway system.

3. Improvements to the outlet works (addition of a bar
rack and erosion control structure, and extension of
the outlet pipe).

Coon Creek Reservoir ~2

1. Possible maintenance work on the control gate.

2. Enlargement and erosion control structures Eor the
spillway.
