I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

B. DESCRIPTION OF EXISTING RESERVOIRS

Coon Creek Reservoirs ~1 and ~2 are the largest of a
series of four reservoirs constructed on the upper headwaters
of Coon Creek. The two lower reservoirs, Coon Creek
Reservoir ~3 (West Griffith Lake) and Coon Creek Reservoir
~4, are not a part of this study. The reservoirs were
constructed with horsedrawn equipment using on-site materials
with initial work beginning about 1895.

Both dams and reservoirs are located on land owned and
administered by the United States Forest Service. Access to
both dams is off of State Highway 65 over a rough, 4-wheel
drive road. The Forest Service plans to provide a new access
road to both dams in the summer of 1989.

The dam on Coon Creek ~1 consists of an earthen/rock
embankment, approximately 690 ft. long with a crest width of
12-18 ft., and is 20 ft. high at its highest point. The
crest of the embankment has several curves and bends which
take advantage of existing natural berms and high points. A
10' wide, unlined spillway is located near the center of the
embankment and drains down through an earthen ditch to a
point near the outlet. The outlet system consists of a 15
inch corrugated metal pipe, with a slide gate, shaft and hand
wheel for control.

I
I
I
I
I
I
I

The embankment of Coon Creek ~2 is constructed of
earthen materials, is 370 ft. long, has a crest width of 12-
17 ft., and is 13 ft. high at its highest point. The
spillway for Coon Creek Reservoir ~2 is located on the east
abutment, is about 8 ft. wide and is unlined. The outlet
works consist of a 15 in. corrugated metal pipe, a slide
gate, shaft and hand wheel. A staff gauge is located on the
upstream embankment. Overall, Coon Creek ~2 has a much
lower, more stable appearing embankment and more acceptable
spillway channel than Coon Creek ~1.

Approximate existing storage capacities (too spillway)
and surface areas of the two reservoirs are shown in the
following table:

To Soillway Elev.
