28

,
,
,

In Larimer and Weld Counties, of which the subject lands are a part,
livestock farms predominate. However, most farms obtain a portion of their
income from two or more types of agricultural enterprises. The various types
are fruit, vegetable, poultry, dairy, field seed crops, hay and silage. In
Larimer and Weld Counties, approximately 50 percent of the croplands are
used to produce livestock feed. The remaining 50 percent are devoted to cash
crops. Of the cash crops, sugar beets and dry edible beans are the most im-
portant, Table No. III B' shows the distribution by percentages of acres 6f
irrigated crops in the Water Supply and Storage Company area.

Tab 1 e 'II C tabu I ates the average crop y i e 1 ds for the 720,000 acres of
irrigated lands in the Colorado-Big Thompson Project Service Area. These
yields are belIeved to be representative of the Water Supply and Storage
Company area.

In the census of 1959, 'Larime~ County had a total of 61,308 head bf cattle,
not including dai ry animals, which was an average of 62 animals per farm. Nearly
all farms in the Water Supply and Storage Company system have facilities for
livestock operations, but there are only a few that carryon any sizable opera-
tions. The average number of head of 1 ivestock on most farms is less than 60,
and the, majority of these are beef cattle, with some farms having sheep and
horses.

r

,~

TABLE I I I-B
IRRIGATED CROP DISTRIBUTION
WATER SUPPLY AND STORAGE COMPANY

Crop

Percentage Distribution of acres
of Irrigated Crops in 1967
Water Supply & Storage Company
serv i ce area

,,'

Barley
Oats
Wheat
Corn:
Alfalfa
Dry edible beans
Suga r Beets
Potatoes
Vegetables
Miscellaneous
Crops Unknown

8
5
2
22
21
5
18
8
8
1
2

)

.,.

Total

100.0
