The snow pack
generally remains on the ground to the middle of June. Access to Long Draw
Reservoir from Fort Collins is normally available until November, at which
time snow accumulation is sufficient to halt normal vehicular traffic.

The average first day of operation for the Grand River Ditch ,is May 24.
In some years the Grand River Ditch transports water across the Continental
Divide as early as May 7.

The average growing season in the Fort Collins - Greeley area is
generally represented by the frost free period, defined by 280F temperatures.
The frost free period for the last ten years is presented in Table I-B.

Precipitation in the Fort Collins"- Greeley area is adequate to support
the semi-arid natural vegetation, stock grazing areas, and marginal dry land
farming. But water consuming crops of forages, grains, sugar beets, corn and
potatoes require irrigation. Precipitation is highly erratic, varying from
less than half of normal in drought years to nearly twice the norm in wet
years. The winter months of November through February produce less than half
the annual precipitation, whereas during the late spring and early summer,
May through July, nearly half the annual precipitation falls.
