3

The estimated cost of enlarging the present single purpose reservoir to
a multiple-purpose 11,000 acre-foot capacity reservoir is $1,089,500*
including construction of the dam, spillway', and outlet works.

*Exclusive of $192,800 specific recreation costs.

GENERAL OBSERVATIONS

-.

Long Draw Reservoir site is located near the Continental Divide at
LaPoudre Pass in the headwaters of the Big South Branch of the Cache
LaPoudre River in northeastern Colorado. The northwest boundary of
Rocky Mountain National Park lies along the southeast side of the reser-
voir. Access from Fort Collins, the nearest major population center, is
on Colorado Highway 14 and Forest Development Road No. 156. The total
distance by road from Fort Collins to the reservoir site is 80 miles.
Travel time is approximately two hours. Colorado Highway 14 is the only
high standard paved road into many of the Roosevelt National Forest's
existing recreation facilities. The' last 15 miles of Highway 14 is
gravel surfaced at present, but the Highway will be paved over Cameron
Pass within 4 years. This will increase the recreation demand substan-
tially, The nearest developed recreation complex to Long Draw is in the
Chambers Lake area.' The facilities at Chambers Lake are filled to capac-
ity most of the season. The facilities to be constructed at Long Draw
will not be in conflict with any existing facilities in the area but will
serve to take some of the pressure off of them.

:~

Recreation use at Long Draw is expected to consist of fishing, hunting,
camping, picnicking, boating, hiking and general outdoor enjoyment. The
reservoir is located in a high mountain valley and the scenic views into
the Mummy and Never Summer ranges in Rocky Mountain National Park are
outstanding, At present there is some use of the area by hikers and
horseback groups as an entrance or exit into Rocky Mountain Park. This
use can be expected to increase. The establishment of a permanent
fisheries pool will lead to the development of a good trout fishery.

RECREATION EVALUATION AND RECOMMENDED DEVELOPMENT

Estimates of Recreation Use

Based on the preceding general observations, reservoir operation data,
and actual use on comparable recreation developments, the following
conclusions were made:

1. The recreation potential is excellent.

2. Annual recreation use is estimated at 33,000 visitor days.ll

11 Including 10,000 days fishing use estimated by the Bureau of Sport
Fisheries and Wildlife.
