I

I

Treated Water Storage

I

I

The City of Delta has three existing treated water storage
reservoirs located in a group on the southeast edge of the distri-
bution system on a high point of Garnet Mesa. The base elevation of
all three reservoirs is approximately 5,140 feet above mean sea
level. The reservoir capacities are approximately 600,000 gallons;
1,000,000 gallons; and 3,500,000 gallons for a total combined
capacity of approximately 5.1 million gallons. All three reservoirs
are constructed of concrete and are covered. The smallest reservoir,
originally constructed in 1911, was recently lined with a plastic
vinyl liner. Both of the smaller reservoirs are covered with metal
roofs. The largest reservoir is the most recent to be constructed and
has a concrete roof. All three reservoirs are interconnected and flow
between the reservoir group and the distribution system is through
three 8-inch pipelines. There are no altitude valves on any of these
lines to prevent overfilling of the reservoirs.

I

I

I

I

An existing water level sensing device in the reservoirs
was at one time able to transmit an electric signal by telephone
cable to a remote reading chart recorder located in the city
shops. This chart recorder has been inoperable for several years and
readings of the water level in the reservoirs are now read manually
and recorded once each day. No records of the daily fluctuations in
the water level are therefore available to accurately investigate
maximum hourly demand. For what it is worth, the daily readings have
normally ranged from approximately 20 to 24.5 feet (spilling) at the
time of measurement, which is most probably early each morning.

I

I

I

I

At one time it was proposed to relay the water level signal
from the city shops to an additional chart recorder to be located in
the master control panel at the filtration plant. Difficulty in
providing a leased telephone line for transmitting this signal
resulted in this aspect of the project being abandoned.

I

I

I

I

I

I

III - 21

I
