estimated to cost $3 million or more. Othe'" drawl.lacKs to a Carter Lilke
diversion stem from thl.! obvious rt'oblems and concerns which would arise from
boring through the embilnkment of such a large lake.

One of the 1'1 atiron Rl.!servo i r divers ions would l.le very s imi I a.- to the Carter

Lake tar. It l'iould consist of a bore through the dam. The estimilted cost for

this is $2 milliun. Because FlatirOn is such a small reservoir, the 16 foot

fluctuation in water level would require placement of the intake structure far

into the reservoir.

The second point of diversion investigated at Flatiron Reservoir would utilize

an existir.g outlet structure thus eliminating the need for boring the darn.

The outlet transfers water under the Flatiron Dam and into Hansen Canal. A

short Gistance dovmstream, the l'later flows into Cottom-lOod Siphon in ol'der to

pass Ul'der a road. The diversion could be made by tapping the Siphon. The

estimated cost of this tap is $250,000 which includes thz diversion structure,

excavation and backfill, pipe, remote control sensing equipment and the cost

of an investigation by the Bureau of Reclamation. The estimated maximum amount

of water IIhich could be diverted through this tap is 65 r~GD Which \'/ould l.le

suffici~nt through the year 1993 for the proposed total system. After the

capacity of the Siphon has been .'eached, additional const..uction v/ould be

necessary in order to provide iln adequate supply of rilW water. The tap 011 the

Sirhon would insure a supply of water anyt ime there is water in the Canal.

H0\1ever, during timES of low reservoir levels, water docs not reilch theoutlet

structure ilnd the Canill is dry.

This pro:llC'111 is easily solved l.leciluse there is a pipeline running hetY/een
Cilrter La\e and Flatiron Reservoir. The level on Flatiron could be maintained
by allovtin~ water tograviLy feed from Carter.

12
