Lupton, CO 80621

Dear Water Purveyor:

Your water system has been out of complisnce with respect to the maximum
contaminant level (~CL) for nitrate. High levels of nitrate can result in
potentially fatal health effects. The situation, in the past, has been
handled by public notification of the problem, and having an alternative
source of safe drinking water.

The need to provide treatment for the removal of nitrate from your water
supply 1s rapidly approaching. !he safe Drinking Water Act of 1986 has
re-established the exemption protedure for ~~L violations. This procedure
allows you to obtain an exemption to the MeL for a three year period. During
that three years, you must decide upon a solution to the nitrate problem, and
begin action towards implementing that solution.

You are strongly encouraged to contact this office and begin the process of
obtaining an exemption to the nitrate MeL. Applications can be made after
July 1, 1988. For further information please contact this office at 331-4545.

Sinc rely, _ /
~ :;>...1--
.;;..-
Jerry C.
