<br />\ <br /> <br />I NTRODUCT ION <br /> <br />During the past ten years, the number of high hazard <br /> <br />dams <br /> <br />in Colorado has <br /> <br />increased from 188 to 246 for a 30.8 <br /> <br />percent increase. <br /> <br />Similarly, the number of <br /> <br />moderate hazard <br /> <br />dams has <br /> <br />incr-eased <br /> <br />49.0 percent <br /> <br />from 233 to 348.' This <br /> <br />increase in the number of high and moderate hazar-d dams is~ <br /> <br />in part, <br /> <br />a result of residential and commercial development <br /> <br />below dams which were agriculture reservoirs originally <br /> <br />located some distance from urban development.~ <br /> <br />Colorado's population ,has increased by 30.8 percent <br /> <br />during <br /> <br />the period <br /> <br />1970 to 1980 as compared to the national <br /> <br />rate of 11.4 percent. <br /> <br />The population growth rate in Colorado <br /> <br />has actually exceeded the national rate since the 1930's.~ <br /> <br />With this increase in Colorado's population, <br /> <br />there <br /> <br />has been a corresponding increase in the, demand for homes and <br /> <br />'A high hazard dam is defined as a dam which would <br />cause loss of life in the event of failure.
