5.1

V. POTENTIAL MODIFICATIONS TO THE MUD FLOW I'IODEl
Refinement of the MUDFlOW model is continuin9. Virtually all of the
originally conceived modifications to the program have been successfully imple-
mented. Future enhancement of the model to broaden its ut'i 1 ity is bei ng cons i dered.
Possible modifications would include:

1. Design of a nonl inear initial depth estimate for thl~ first trial of each time
step. This feature would greatly speed up the model and enhance its
capability to model frontal waves.

2. Optimization of the time step incremE!nt and decreml~nt functions.

3. Incorporat i on of i nfi ltrati on and i nt'erc:epti on parameters to more complete ly.e-
model the rainfall/runoff component.

4. Revision of the model to incorporate a. full dynamic wave approximation to the
momentum equation. This would include development of logic to permit the
computer to evaluate whether use of a full dynami c wave approximat i on is
necessary by comparing the magnitude of components in the momentum equation.
Work on this option has already commenced.

5. Enhance output opti ons to create a compl ete fil e of hydrographs for each
cross section analyzed.

6. Design an option to permit model ing of <I nonuniform grid system.

7. Design a component to incorporate variable channel geometry.

8. Expand the ICHECK subroutine to identify possible input errors for all the
elevation and roughness data.

9. Development of a methodology to assign a statisticall probability to the area
that is inundated by a flow simulation versus the area of the possible flow
path area that is not inundated.

10. Design a sediment-transport component for the mod,el to analyze scour and
aggradation.

11. Develop a program to util ize Computer-Aided Design (CAD) for creation of grid
networks and a grid elevation files.
