Problems and Floodinl: History
Flooding problems in Fort Collins are caused by a variety of factors including multiple flooding
sources ranging from small swales to the Cache la Poudre River, multiple causes such as
thunderstorms, general rains and snowmelt, some inadequate storm drainage systems, irrigation
canals that convey floodwater from one watershed to another, some areas of flat topography, and
some man-made flow obstructions that block the natural drainage courses (i.e, railroad
embankments, highway embankment, county roads, etc.), Many of the city's floodplains have been
identified, either on the city's Flood Insurance Study (FIS) or in studies conducted by the city,
Some of those flooding sources experience flash flooding, with very short waming times available
to protect vulnerable buildings, Other flooding sources experience flooding that occurs more slowly

1
