This structure would cause 11.3 feet head loss during the

Standard Projeot Flood and 1.9 feet during the Intermediate

Regional Flood.

The Missouri Pacific Railroad bridge is a 525-foot

B-span structure, one of the westerly spans being over a 175-foot

steel thru-truss. The top of the rails would be overtopped 1.5

feet by the Standard Project Flood and O.B feet by the Interme-

diate Regional Flood. The bridge head losses would be 6.7 feet

and 2.0 feet, respectively, for the Standard Project Flood and

Intermediate Regional Flood.

Obstructions to Floodflow

The effect of obstructions due to bridges and their

approach fille has been described in previous paragraphs. The

numerous streets and dirt trails in the flood plain generally

do not obstruct floodflows. However, development and land fills

in or near the channel Can obstruct floodflows and cause increased

depths.

Flood Records

Stream stage and discharge records indicating flood

potential are available for Fountain Creek. From January 1922 to

September 1925, a non-recording gage was located within one-half

mile of the Bth Street Bridge. A recording gage Was installed at

the Bth Street Bridge from October 1940 until the June 1965 flood

washed it away. Presently, stream gaging stations operate 'at

several locations upstream of the study reach.

Data on floods in the area were obtained from State

of Colorado Water Records, newspaper files, and other historical

documents. The flood profiles and flooded areas maps were devel-

oped from this data, the results of previous studies, field in-

vestigations, and office computations.

)

20

,

,
