<br />The results of the original study for Basalt were reviewed at a <br />final community coordination meeting held on February 7, 1979, and <br />attended by representatives of FEMA, GAl, and the community. No <br />significant problems were raised at the meeting. <br /> <br />The final community coordination meeting for this revised study <br />for Basalt was held on June 9, 1986, and was attended be repre- <br />sentatives of FEMA, CWCB, DEe, the City of Aspen, the Towns of <br />Basalt and Snowmass Village, and Pitkin County. As a result of <br />that meeting, it was decided that flood hazard information for all <br />of Pitkin County, including the incorporated communities, would be <br />shown on one Flood Insurance Rate Map. Therefore, flood hazard <br />information has been presented on the Flood Insurance Rate Map <br />outside the corporate limits of Basalt. This information is for <br />information purposes only. <br /> <br />2.0 AREA STUDIED <br /> <br />2.1 Scope of Study <br /> <br />This Flood Insurance Study <br />Pitkin Counties, Colorado. <br />Vicinity Map (Figure 1). <br /> <br />covers the Town of Basalt, Eagle and <br />The area of study is shown on the <br /> <br />The following streams studied by detailed methods for this study <br />were the Fryingpan River, from its confluence with the Roaring <br />Fork River to approximately 0.75 mile upstream and the Roaring <br />Fork River, from the Eagle-Pitkin County line to Tagerts Lake. <br /> <br />The areas studied by detailed methods were selected with priority <br />given to all known flood hazard areas and areas of projected <br />development or proposed construction through April 1990. <br /> <br />2.2 Community Description <br /> <br />Basalt is located in southwestern Eagle County and north-central <br />Pitkin County, approximately 20 miles southeast of Glenwood <br />Springs. The economy of Basalt primarily depends on farming, <br />Government, or local business, with recreation accounting for only <br />30 percent of the economy (Reference 1). <br /> <br />Population and development have increased steadily since World <br />War II, particularly in those areas affected by the ski industry. <br />According to the U..S. Census Bureau, the population of Basalt <br />increased from 213 in 1960 to 529 in 1980 (Reference 2). <br /> <br />Basalt is located at the confluence of the Roaring Fork and <br />Fryingpan Rivers.
