quality to downstream areas resulting from 110w concentrations within unlined area~.
Selective improvements could create very similar disturhan<:es as channelization,
howeverbccausetheirnprovemenlscanbeselcctivelysiled,avoidanccofdiSlurbancesis
easier to achieve,
A comparison of potential habitat disturbances for each of the concepts was
conducted. With the esception of the channeliwtion concept(sl,the alternatives would
cause minimal disturbances to the habita', ifimplcmcntcd, The disturbance of habital
areas would be to mitigated by replantingnativc species afterconsttuction. It is not
anticipated that implememation of any of the alternatcs would result in a lossofh.abitat
value. Most disturbance would be temporary in nature, mostly occurring at tbe time of
construction. Tbefloodplain pre>ervation concept bas tbepotential for affecting rhe 1 east
amount of babitat disturbance. The losses wbichcan occur include the loss oflOe and
bank vegetation over time from natural erosion of the invert and banks w hich are unlined.
There are currently >everal locations along lhe major drainage ways where this is the
situation.
The least total areal disturbance resulls for the floodplain preservation or a
>elective improvement concept. Loss of habitat would occur naturally. mainly along the
toe and at low channel benches due 10 the long-term degradalion of the il1vert. and
localized blll1k erosion. Water quality for the downstreamreaehes would not necessarily
be improved by a floodplain preservation concept alone because of the potential fot
sedimelll d"''Position due 10 natural erosion proces~s. For tile floodplain preservation
concept it was consider<:d that ~ft"r a hank or in\ert failure a portion of the native
veget.ation wouldevemually replace itsclf over a period of years.
Implement.ation ofa selective improvement plan could result in an inc reasein
habitat value as compared to the floodplain preservation concept. This is because
selectiveimprovemenlS, ifcoflStructed prior to the onset of active nat ural bank and invert
erosion, would prcventthe loss of native habitat along the existing low t10w banks an(j
in floodplain areas, Disturbances due to construction could he beller controlled and
minimized with a >elective improvement concept as compared to a dut<l"cliL.alioll
concept.
