Roadside Compatibility--Many culverts. like older bridges, present <br />roadside hazards. Headwalls and wingwalls higher than the road or embankment <br />surface may constitute a fixed obstacle hazard. Abrupt dropoffs over the end <br />of a culvert or steep embankments may represent roll-over hazards to vehicles <br />which leave the roadway. <br /> <br />1-1.3 Maintenance Heeds. <br /> <br />lack of maintenance is a prime cause of improper functioning 1n culverts and <br />other drainage structures. Regular periodic inspections allow minor problems <br />to be spotted and corrected before they become serious. <br /> <br />Section 2. OBJECTIVES. AUDIENCE. AND ORGANIZATION OF THE MANUAL <br /> <br />1-2.1 Objectives. <br /> <br />3.
