impacts to existing wetlands with their associated fauna and flora along the
creek. Cherry Creek's gradient may also experience changes as a result of the
dam's construction. This could lead 'to increB.sed headcutting on tributaries to
Cherry Creek.

Regarding cultural resources. two sites that: may be potentially eligible to

the National Register of Historic Places appear to be in the project area: the

Castlewood Dam and an Indian massacre site on Lake Gulch. Future studies in the

project area dependent on project aut:horizati,l>n include consultation with the

Colorado State Historic Preservation Officer, '" detailed search of all material

relating to the cultural resources in the urea, a pedestrian survey of the area,

and determination of eligibility for the Castlewood Dam and the massacre

site.

In swnmary, because of its location in an eastern E~xtension of the Rocky

Mountain foothills, the Castlewood State Recreation Area, and proposE!d project

site provides habitats normally found further west. This permits wildlife

normally associated with more montane areas to occur in the Cast:lewood area. As

such, the Castlewood area represents a fairly uniquE! complE!x of habitats.

Construction of a dam at Castlewood is likely to have significant nE!gativE!

impacts to wetland and riparian habi tats, and to a roul ti tude of plant and animal

species which exist at and below the normal project pool and, in flood

conditions. at and below the maximum project pool. These species could include

federally-listed threatened or endangered species. The existing landscape

aesthetics would also be impacted to a degree which is d.ependent on the final

project design. Noise, fumes, and fugitive dust would be associated with the

construction of the proposed project and could represent "n adverse impact during

the construction period by possibly disrupting park a.ctivities and public

recreation during this time.

ALTERNATIVE 6 - HARDEN DAM FACE

This alternative would include protecting 'I:he existing embankment crest and

downstream slopes from erosion caused by overflow of the dam during the PMF,

61
