The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has provided a list of federally

listed endangered species which may occur within the study area. This list,

which is preliminary and subject to revision as project specifics become

available, includes the following species:

Black-footed ferret
Peregrine falcon
Bald eagle
Whooping crane

Mustela nigripes
Falco peregrinus
Haliaeetus leucocephalus
Grus americana

The USFWS has also included a list of species which could potentially be present

in the project area and which are candidates for official Federal listing as

threatened or endangered species. Although these species do not have legal

status under the Endangered Species Act, this listing is provided to comply with

the spirit of the Act, especially since it is possible that one or more of these

species could achieve official listing status prior to the completion of this

proposed project. These species include:

Ambrosia
Ferruginous hawk
Long-billed curlew
Mountain plover
Southern spotted owl
Swainson's hawk
Swift fox
Western snowy plover
White-faced ibis

Ambrosia linearis

Buteo regalis

Numenious americanus

Charadrius montanus

Strix occidentalis lucida

Buteo swainsoni

Vulpes velox

Charadrius alexandrinus nivosus

Plegadis chihi

The Castlewood Canyon area also contains wetland and riparian habitats which

are valuable to wildlife resources; habitat types which are limited in areal

extent within the State of Colorado. Construction of a dam at Castlewood could

also adversely impact Cherry Creek by altering natural instream flow volumes and

velocities, as well as the existing fluvial aquatic habitats, for a significant

distance downstream from the dam. This reach of Cherry Creek may also experience

streambed degradation downstream from the dam, resulting in possible adverse

60
