of 110,000 c.f.s. at Holly on 20 October. The storm centered over

May Valley, Colorado, where 6.3 inches of precipitation were recorded

in about 12 hours.

Flood of June 1921 - Although the rainfall that caused

this flood occurred above the location of John Martin Reservoir, it

is a good example of the flood potential of a relatively small area

in the region. A series of cloudbursts centered over an area near

~

Pueblo, Colorado, was the primary cause of the June 1921 flood. The

principal center of the storm was north of Pueblo where there were

12 inches of rain. The streams that enter the Arkansas River between

Canon City and the mouth of Chico Creek, 16 miles downstream from

Pueblo, were the principal contributors to the flood. The flood

crest increased rapidly on its way downstream to La Junta but was

greatly reduced in further traveling down the valley of the Arkansas

River. Peak discharges were 103,000 c.f.s. at Pueblo; 200,000 c.f.s.

at La Junta; 187,000 c.f.s. at Las Animas; 130,000 c.f.s. at Lamar;

and 90,000 c.f.s. at Holly.

Flood of June 1949 - The storm of 3-5 June produced

. .-

moderate to heavy rainfall over the area above John Martin Reservoir.

All the runoff from rainfall above the dam was contained in the reser-

voir but heavy rainfall also occurred over the area below the

reservoir. This rainfall was centered near Granada, Colorado, where

9.18 inches were recorded. Lamar recorded 7.28 inches and Holly

7.00 inches during the storm. The runoff on the Arkansas River peaked

at 34,5000 c.f.s. at Holly on 5 June.

Flood of May 1951 - During the night of 14-15 Maya

series of thunderstorms centered in southeastern Colorado and south-

western Kansas. Rainfall was heaviest near Two Buttes and Springfield,

Colorado, where 8.0 inches and 9.0 inches, respectively, were recorded.

Holly recorded 5.5 inches during the period. A peak flow of 59,900

c.f.s. was recorded on the Arkansas River at Holly on 15 May.

App. 4
6
