Records for Wild

Horse Creek at Holly are available for the period of 1923 through

1935 and 1939 through 1950. No records of flow are available for Two

Butte Creek. ~

"

Summary of Historical Floods

During the period of record for wild Horse Creek only

one notable flood was recorded. This flow occurred 28 August 1935

and attained a peak discharge of 22,000 cubic feet per second, largely

as a result of a darn failure. Subsequent to the period of record,

a peak flow of 10,000 cubic feet per second was measured on 17 June

1965.

In June 1965, a peak flow of 182,000 cubic feet per

second was generated on Two Butte Creek which entered the Arkansas

River opposite Holly. This flow crossed the Arkansas River Valley

and flowed along the Wild Horse levee, destroying the levee and

allowing floodwaters from Two Butte Creek and the Arkansas River to

inundate the town to depths up to eight feet. Damage at Holly was

estimated at $1,500,000.

Table 1 lists the highest ten Arkansas River floods

known to have caused damage. Relative size comparison of these

floods was not attempted, however the June 1965 flood is considered

the flood of record for the Arkansas River.

.

App. 4
4
