2.0 AREA STUDIED

2.1

Scope of Study

."

This ~lood Insurance Study covers the unincorporated areas of
Boulder County. Not included in the study are the incorporated
conununities of Erie, Longmont, Jamestown, Boulder, Louisville,
Broomfield, Lafayette, Nederland, Lyons, Superior, and Ward.
Roosevelt National ~orest, which covers approximately half of
Boulder County, was also excluded from the study. The area of
study is shown on the Vicinity Map (~igure 1).

~.
.

The streams studied by detailed methods include Airport Creek,
North Branch Ai rport Creek, Arapahoe Avenue Oved 1 ow, Bear Canyon
Creek, Big Dry Creek, Boulder Creek, South Boulder Creek,
Brandywine Creek, City Park Channel, City Park Channel South
Tributary, Coal Creek, Dry Creek, Dry Creek No.1, Clover Basin
Tributary, Steele Lakes Tributary, Dry Creek No.2, Dry Creek No.
3, EImers Twomi Ie Creek, ~ourmi Ie Creek, ~ourmi 1 e Canyon Creek,
Gay Reservoir Channel, Gay Reservoir Channel North Tributary,
Goodhue Ditch, Goose Creek, James Creek, Lefthand Creek, Little
james Creek, Unnamed Tributary to Little James Creek, Little
Thompson River, Middle Boulder Creek, Nissen Reservoir Channel,
North Beaver Creek, Rock Creek, Skunk Creek, St. Vrain Creek,
South St. Vrain Creek, Middle St. Vrain Creek, Spring Gulch,
Westlake Channel, Westlake Channel North Tributary, and Wonderland
Creek. The lOa-year flood elevations were
calculated for each of these streams, but insufficient data were
generated to calculate the necessary ~lood Hazard ~actors.

2.2 Community Description

Boulder County
50 mi les south
population of
44 percent from

is located in north-central Colorado, approximately
of the Colorado-Wyoming state line. In 1980, the
Boulder County was 189,625, an increase of
a population of 141,889 in 1970 (Reference 1).

Boulder Creek is a steep mountain stream draining a portion of the
eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains in Boulder County.
