<br />This ~lood Insurance Study covers the unincorporated areas of
<br />Boulder County. Not included in the study are the incorporated
<br />conununities of Erie, Longmont, Jamestown, Boulder, Louisville,
<br />Broomfield, Lafayette, Nederland, Lyons, Superior, and Ward.
<br />Roosevelt National ~orest, which covers approximately half of
<br />Boulder County, was also excluded from the study. The area of
<br />study is shown on the Vicinity Map (~igure 1).

<br />The streams studied by detailed methods include Airport Creek,
<br />North Branch Ai rport Creek, Arapahoe Avenue Oved 1 ow, Bear Canyon
<br />Creek, Big Dry Creek, Boulder Creek, South Boulder Creek,
<br />Brandywine Creek, City Park Channel, City Park Channel South
<br />Tributary, Coal Creek, Dry Creek, Dry Creek No.1, Clover Basin
<br />Tributary, Steele Lakes Tributary, Dry Creek No.2, Dry Creek No.
<br />3, EImers Twomi Ie Creek, ~ourmi Ie Creek, ~ourmi 1 e Canyon Creek,
<br />Gay Reservoir Channel, Gay Reservoir Channel North Tributary,
<br />Goodhue Ditch, Goose Creek, James Creek, Lefthand Creek, Little
<br />james Creek, Unnamed Tributary to Little James Creek, Little
<br />Thompson River, Middle Boulder Creek, Nissen Reservoir Channel,
<br />North Beaver Creek, Rock Creek, Skunk Creek, St. Vrain Creek,
<br />South St. Vrain Creek, Middle St. Vrain Creek, Spring Gulch,
<br />Westlake Channel, Westlake Channel North Tributary, and Wonderland
<br />Creek. Detai led-study streams were selected wi th priori ty gi ven
<br />to all known flood hazard areas and areas of projected
<br />development.

<br />The following are streams for which only approximate flood hazards
<br />are presented: Gregory Creek, Bluebell Canyon Creek, Viele
<br />Channel, Davids Draw, Anderson Ditch, Little Dry Creek, Sunshine
<br />Gulch, and King Gulch. The lOa-year flood elevations were
<br />calculated for each of these streams, but insufficient data were
<br />generated to calculate the necessary ~lood Hazard ~actors.

<br />2.2 Community Description
<br />

<br />of the Colorado-Wyoming state line. In 1980, the
<br />Boulder County was 189,625, an increase of
<br />a population of 141,889 in 1970 (Reference 1).
<br />
<br />Boulder Creek is a steep mountain stream draining a portion of the
<br />eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains in Boulder County. The creek
<br />extends 22 miles eastward from the Continental Divide to emerge
<br />from the mountains and pass through the City of Boulder. Boulder
<br />Creek then flows 18 more miles to enter Saint Vrain Creek 5 miles
<br />east of Longmont. Boulder Creek drains an area of 440 square
<br />miles. Slightly more than one-half of the drainage area is in the
<br />mountains.
