Flooding was reported to be the greatest
in northern Malta. Water was prevented from entering the southside resi-
dential area of Malta by an emergency dike built to keep floodwater out
of the railroad underpass. Damage to the city was esti_ted to be $85,500
based on 1952 price levels and the extent of development. Based on cur-
rent levels of development in the flood plain, a recurrence of the 1952
flood would csuse $2,340,000 in damages.

FLOOD OF APRIL 1978
Kelting of heavy snowpsck in the Kilk River basin caused I18jor
flooding between Kalta and the mouth of the Kilk River. Abnol'llally high
temperatures in early April were responsible for the sudden melt of snow.
Residents in several communities had to evacuate their homes. The flood.
ing lasted over a week with peak flows that reached stages similar to
those experienced in the 1952 flood; however, discharges were consid-
erably less.

FLOOD OF SEPTEMBER 1986
Along a lOO-mile section between the towns of Chinook and Nashua,
the Kilk River and its tributaries began flooding on 25 September 1986
after torrential downpours dumped up to 8 inches of rain in 18 hours in
some areas. Lodge Creek, Battle Creek, Aasiniboine Creek, and Thirty-Kile
Creek contributed to flooding along the Kilk River. Widespread flooding
throughout the Kilk River basin caused damages estiaated to be
$28,217,000. This included I18j or damages to agricultural crops and lands,
irrigation syste.., roads, and bridges, as well as residential and cOllller.
eial buildings within some communities. One person drowned at Harlem,
Kontana. A successful flood fight was staged at Malta with only minor
damages sustained.

I
I
I

10
