<br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />Simons, Li and Associates, Inc, <br />Job Number 6l43J002 <br />Project Portland Flume Reconstruction <br /> <br />contractor can best take advantage of his equipment, personnel, <br />experience and knowledge which should result in the most econo- <br />mical solution. <br /> <br />In general. temporary supports or permanent underpinning systems <br />will be required for any foundations intersecting a line drawn <br />upward at a slope of 1:1 from the bottom of the flume excavation. <br />This can be modified somewhat if relatively rigid lateral support <br />of the excavation walls is provided, Foundations for temporary <br />shoring and/or permanent underpinning systems should be designed <br />to bear below the theoretical 1:1 line with a minimum depth of 4 <br />feet below lowest adjacent finished grade for permanent elements, <br />and should be sized based on a maximum allowable bearing capacity <br />of 3000 psf, General comments on individual structures are <br />included included hereinafter: <br /> <br />Structure No. IP - (Sta. 24 + 03): This structure appears to be <br />in an unstable condition based on the temporary cable support pre- <br />sently being used, Both temporary and permanent support may be <br />necessary and several methods appear feasible, <br /> <br /> <br />Structure No, 2P - (Sta. 16 + 20): The alignment for the new <br />flume will be shifted slightly to the north in this area. If the <br />existing flume wall is left in place, it does not appear that add- <br />itional support will be required. If construction activities dis- <br />turbed this area, temporary support in the form of isolated pits <br />near the corners in conjunction with a carrier beam along the <br />north wall may be necessary. <br /> <br />Structure No, 3P - (Sta. 15 + 10): The alignment for the new <br />flume will be shifted slightly to the north in this area also. <br />Based on the distance from the new alignment, it does not appear <br /> <br />-11- <br /> <br />@ <br />
