HODGES.

c

SCOPE OF REPORT.

In 1923 severe Hoods occurred on the larger streams in Wyoming
and a number of cloudburst Hoods on small streams in Wyoming
and ~pecially in Colorado. An investigation of the principal Hoods
in each State waamade, and the results are given in this paper,
together with descriptions of two Colorado Hoods of 1922, In addi-
tion a study waa made of all cloudburst Hoods to determiile the areaa
chiefly subject to them.

1

-'
"

GENERAL FEATURES OF THE FLOODS.

TYPES,

Floods in the Rocky Mountain region are of two types-the Hoods
in the larger streams due to general rains pf several days' duration
over large areas and $,e so-called cloudhurst Hoods due to intense
rains of short duration covering well-defined small areas, Floods of
the first type are relatively infrequent, and, aa they are well under-
stood, their characteristics will not be discussed, Ouly the severe
Hoods of this type that occurred in 1923 are described in this report.
Cloudburst Hoods cause the streams to rise and fall suddenly.
Although they cause much less damage than those of the first type,
they occur frequently and are especially disaatrous to railroads and
highways. .

AB.EAS SUllJECT TO CLOUDBURST FLOODS.

Reeord~ of nearly 100 Hoods in Colorado were compiled to determine
the areas most subject to cloudburst Hoods. . For many of these
Hoods the available information covered only the date and location
of the rises in small streams that were sufficiently pronounced to be
called Hoods by residents. Most of these Hoods occurred in the eaatern
foothill region, which extends from the New Mexico line on the south
to the Wyoming line on the north, and in a strip of plains area 50
miles wide just east of the mountains. In this area the severest
Hoods occurred between Canon City and Pueblo, in the trian"crular
105

~
.

.1;

-g

'.
;>
:;;

.~.

:~
