Approximately three-quarters of the basin received rainfall
in excess of that figure.

Because of the flood control measures in effect, as later described,
and the much smaller rainfall, this flood did not have near the effect as
the 1935 flood. All of the bridges crossing the creek, however, were
washed out at the abutments, stranding numerous travelers. The damages
from the flood were estimated to be $169,165 above Kiowa.

4. Magnitude of Previous Storms

The State Engineer and others have computed the magnitude of the
major storms on Kiowa Creek by measurement of the stream at the highwater
marks, which may be summarized as follows.

TABLE 3 - Selected Peak Discharges in the Kiowa Creek Watershed

LOCATION DRAINAGE AREA DATE OF FLOOD PEAK DISCHARGE
Square Miles Second-Feet
Kiowa Creek at
Elbert 65 1935 43,500
East Kiowa Creek
at Elbert 28.6 1965 41,500
West Kiowa Creek
at Elbert 35.9 1965 20,000
Kiowa Creek 21
Miles Below
Elbert 190 1935 110,000
Kiowa Creek
at Kiowa 111 1965 19,700

All of these floods are considered to be in excess of that which
might be expected to occur on an average of once each 100 years.

6
