The purpose of the
walking inspection trip was to determine channel characteristics for
flood hazards related to a Master Plan which we are preparing for the
Urban Drainage and Flood Control District and several municipalities
plus Jefferson County.

We noted several instances of apparent serious pollution of this public
waterway which we wish to call to your attention. These are briefly
1 isted below.

1) lena Gulch, immediately dmmstream of the Maple Grove
Reservoi r. On September 3, labor Day, the enti re flow
of the stream (approximately 2 cfs) was ink black for at
least 4 hours, the pollution e;<tendin<j for" ':he full len<jth
of lena Gulch to its confluence witi-. Clear Creek. Inter-
views with residents alon<j the Creek indicated that the
pollution mi<jht be originating with a water treatment plant
situated on 26th Avenue below the dam. One individual
indicated that he thought it was probably fi' Iter backwash
water; however, he pointed out that similar discharges
were infrequently made, and then only on holidays. An-
other resident indicated that he thou<jht l.ena Gulch was
a ditch jor the purpose of carryin<j off such waste dis-
cha rges.

2) Camp George West, in the NE quarter, Section I, Township
4 S, Ran<je 70 W. The dischar<je from a 2~' pipe into lena
Gulch was white and had an odor characteristic of pesticides,
accordin<j to our en<jineer. We call this to your attention
because of the downstream water supply reservoir at W. 20th
Avenue. The en<jineer in our office noting this particular
dischar<je is a sanitary engineer by education.
