<br /> <br />Location: Sarasota County, Florida <br />Project: Bahia Vista/Lockwood Ridge <br />Floodplain Reclamation Project <br />Techniques: Acquisition, Demolition, <br />Construction of Earthen Berm and Pump <br />Station <br />Contact: Caroiyn Eastwood, Sarasota County <br />Stormwater Management <br />ceastwood@co.sarasota.fl.us <br />or 941-861-0903 <br /> <br />Background <br />The Bahia Vista/l.ockwood Ridge Floodplain Reclamation Project is <br />located \\ithin the Phillippi Creek Drainage Basin in Sarasota County. <br />The project is intended to reduce the risk of flooding to approximately 100 homes in the Oak Shores and Bellevue Terrace subdi\isions. <br /> <br />Project Description <br />As part of the Reclamation Project, Sarasota County has acquired and demolished 31 homes on the northwest side of Phillippi Creek in <br />order to constml1 an earthen benn and pump station to protect the remaining 75 homes. As part of the final design process, a parallel <br />storage facility will be constmcted alongside the benn. Final design of the Bahia Vista/l.ockwood Ridge Floodplain Reclamation Project <br />is nearing completion. <br /> <br />Included in this project is the acquisition of a vacant nine-acre parcel containing two lakes to prO\ide stonnwater retention. Creation of <br />a passive neighborhood park \\ith a playground and hiking/biking trails has been proposed for this site. <br /> <br />Project design is currently in the final stages of development. It is anticipated that constmction of this project \\ill begin in early 2002. <br /> <br />Benefits <br />. Provides flood relief for adjacent residential neighborhoods. <br />. Provides for surface water quality improvements. <br />. Promotes resource conservation. <br />. Creates a passive park along the benn area. Among the amenities \\ill be picnic shelters, grills, gazebos, a hiking trail and a canoe <br />launch site. Parking areas and handicap accessibility also \\ill be prO\ided. <br />Project Cost and Funding Sources <br />. Florida Communities Tmst (FCT) through the Preservation 2000 GnUlt Program for acquisition and demolition = $840,000 <br />.
