The entire area through which Sulphur <br />Gulch flows is planned for residential development. <br /> <br />Tallman Gulch, draining an area of approximately 6.1 square miles, <br />flows northwesterly through Douglas County. The detailed-study <br />area is fram the confluence with Sulphur Gulch 3.0 miles upstream <br />through residen- tially zoned land. <br /> <br />Bayou Gulch, draining an area of approximately 22.5 square miles, <br />flows northwesterly through Douglas County. The study reach <br />extends from the confluence with Cherry Creek to a point 4.0 miles <br />upstream. The Bayou Gulch drainaqe area is predominantly <br />agricultural land. <br /> <br />South platte River and Horse Creek, both at Deckers. are located <br />in Pike National Forest. The South Platte River drains an area of <br />approximately 2,018 square miles, and Horse Creek drains roughly <br />211 square miles. The detailed-study areas include 1.4 square <br />miles of the South Platte River and 0.7 mile of Horse Creek. <br />Horse Creek perennially flows northwesterly before it joins the <br />South Platte River at the Douglas-Jefferson County line. <br /> <br />West Creek, draining an area of approximately 61.3 square miles, <br />flows northerly and discharges into West Creek Lake. The study <br />area includes 1.5 miles of perennial stream located in Pike <br />National Forest, approximately 3.5 miles upstream from its con- <br />fluence with Horse Creek. The detailed-study area is planned for <br />residential development and recreation. <br /> <br />The climate of the plains area of the county is high, inland <br />continental, modified by the Rocky Mountains immediately to the <br />west and Palmer Lake Divide to the south. preCipitation is light, <br />with an annual average of 15 to 18 inches. Totals vary <br />substantially for individual years because a large part of the <br />yearly total is from sUDlller thunderstorms. Temperatures in the <br />area range from a high of sliqhtly more than 100*F to a low of <br />approximately -35*F. The mean annual air temperature is 47*F, and <br />the mean SUDlller air temperature is 66*F. <br /> <br />The northern one-balf of the plains area of the county consists of <br />three basic soil types. Loamy and sandy soils exist on the flood <br />plains and terraces. Terrain in these areas is nearly level to <br />gently slopinq to moderately steep, with sandy and gravelly soils <br />on the uplands. Vegetation is mainly grass. with SOllIe Gambel oak, <br />mountain mahogany. and ponderosa pine trees (Reference 3). Most <br />of the remaining area is qently slopinq to moderately steep. with <br />loamy soils on the uplands. <br /> <br />The southern portion of the plains area is gently sloping to <br />steep, with sandy soils on the uplands and loamy soils on the <br />tablelands.
