<br />County, and residential development is occurring at a rapid pace. <br />Significant portions of this part of the county are zoned residen- <br />tial, and planned developments are numerous. <br /> <br />The study area is in the South platte River watershed. The study <br />areas of the South Platte River, Horse Creek at Deckers, and West <br />Creek are within the Pike National Forest. All of the other study <br />areas are portions of two subbasins, Plum Creek and Cherry Creek. <br />East Plum Creek originates in Pike National Forest and joins West <br />Plum Creek near Sedalia. Plum Creek flows northerly and joins the <br />south platte River at Chatfield Lake. <br /> <br />Cherry Creek, located in the eastern part of the county, flows <br />northerly through Arapahoe County to its confluence with the South <br />platte River in Denver. <br /> <br />Plum Creek, with a drainage area of approximately 319.0 square <br />miles. perennially discharges into Chatfield Lake. The detailed- <br />study area includes 10 miles of stream that flow northwesterly <br />through Sedalia and Louviers. Land use plans (Reference 2) indi- <br />cate that the plum Creek watershed primarily covers farmland, with <br />residential development planned for Sedalia and Louviers. <br /> <br />Indian Creek. draining an area of approximately 16.7 square miles, <br />perennially flows northeasterly through Douglas County. The <br />detailed-study area includes 1.5 miles of channel at the Indian <br />Creek Subdivision, approximately 3.5 miles upstream from its con- <br />fluence with Plum Creek south of Louviers. <br /> <br />West Plum Creek flows northerly from Perry Park to its confluence <br />with Plum Creek at Sedalia. West Plum Creek, which is a perennial <br />stream, drains approximately 27.7 square miles of farmland. The <br />main developed area along the 3.0-mile length of detailed study is <br />Perry Park. <br /> <br />East Plum Creek, near the Town of Larkspur. drains an area of <br />approximately 63.2 square miles. It meanders to the north through <br />Douglas County, passing through the Town of Castle Rock, before <br />joining West Plum Creek at Sedalia. The detailed-study area in- <br />cludes 21.5 miles of perennial stream that drain residential areas <br />as well as farmland. <br /> <br />Hangmans Gulch, with a drainage area of approximately 1.3 square <br />miles, flows northwesterly through a residentially zoned area of <br />Castle Rock. The detailed-study area includes 2.0 miles of ephem- <br />eral stream. Approximately 0.4 mile north of town, Han9D&ns Gulch <br />joins East Plum Creek. <br /> <br />Sellers Gulch, draining 15.5 square miles of sparsely developed <br />residential land southeast of Castle Rock, flows northwesterly and <br />joins East Plum Creek upstream of the Interstate Highway 25 bridge <br /> <br />6 <br />
