BASIN CHARACTERISTICS

LOCATION

~
~.

The Cache la Poudre River is a major left-bank tributary of
the South Platte River. It joins the South Platte River at mile
240.6, about 5 ~les east of Greeley, Colorado. It originates
within Rocky Moqntain National Park at an elevation close to 12,000
feet .above mean sea level; then it flows successively northward,
eastward, and squtheastward to its confluence with the South Platte
River at an ele..;ation of about 4,600 feet above mean sea level.
It drains an ar~a of 1,890 square miles. Most of this area is in
Larimer and Weld Counties in Colorado; however, it does include
,
small areas in A;lbany and Laramie Counties in Wyoming. The basin
is shown on pla~e 1.

TOPOGRAPHY

The westerq portion of the basin lies within the southern
Rocky Mountain Province of the Rocky Mountains System. The topog-
raphy' is rugged, with very; steep stream slopes and narrow stream
valleys. Most of this lDOuntainous part of the basin is forested,
the greatest poI;tion of which is included within the Roosevelt
National Forest, The eastern part of the basin lies within the
Great Plains Prqvince of the Interior Plains. The topography' in
this part is ch~acterized by rolling hills interspersed with
extensive areas of gently slopes plains, progressing to flatter
stream slopes and wider stream valleys. Most of the basin's range-
lands, some brush-covered, and much of the basin's arable lands,
both irrigated and dry-farmed, lie in the plains area of the basin.

5
