<br />BASIN CHARACTERISTICS <br /> <br />LOCATION <br /> <br />~ <br />~. <br /> <br />The Cache la Poudre River is a major left-bank tributary of <br />the South Platte River. It joins the South Platte River at mile <br />240.6, about 5 ~les east of Greeley, Colorado. It originates <br />within Rocky Moqntain National Park at an elevation close to 12,000 <br />feet .above mean sea level; then it flows successively northward, <br />eastward, and squtheastward to its confluence with the South Platte <br />River at an ele..;ation of about 4,600 feet above mean sea level. <br />It drains an ar~a of 1,890 square miles. Most of this area is in <br />Larimer and Weld Counties in Colorado; however, it does include <br />, <br />small areas in A;lbany and Laramie Counties in Wyoming. The basin <br />is shown on pla~e 1. <br /> <br />TOPOGRAPHY <br /> <br />The westerq portion of the basin lies within the southern <br />Rocky Mountain Province of the Rocky Mountains System. The topog- <br />raphy' is rugged, with very; steep stream slopes and narrow stream <br />valleys. Most of this lDOuntainous part of the basin is forested, <br />the greatest poI;tion of which is included within the Roosevelt <br />National Forest, The eastern part of the basin lies within the <br />Great Plains Prqvince of the Interior Plains. The topography' in <br />this part is ch~acterized by rolling hills interspersed with <br />extensive areas of gently slopes plains, progressing to flatter <br />stream slopes and wider stream valleys. Most of the basin's range- <br />lands, some brush-covered, and much of the basin's arable lands, <br />both irrigated and dry-farmed, lie in the plains area of the basin. <br /> <br />5 <br />
